Spiked Cider

Friday has never felt so good! After a month of pretty much non-stop travel I am so excited for a full weekend and weeks to come at home (fingers crossed nothing comes up to change that.) While I'm finding it hard to believe that it's nearing the end of October, the changing leaves and cooler days are clear reminders that fall is here. And with all things fall in mind, there is no better seasonal indulgence than hot spiced cider spiked with bourbon! While I missed prime apple picking season at the local orchards, it's still easy to find tasty cider at the grocery store. Add a few spices and an ounce or two of bourbon and this simple drink is ready to sip all evening long. I tried experimenting with maple syrup and cinnamon which turned out quite well but am keen to also try adding walnut liqueur into the mix with fresh nutmeg for a more nutty, earthy flavor. 

Spiked Apple Cider

1 cup fresh apple cider

1.5 oz. bourbon

1/2 tsp. real maple syrup

Cinnamon sticks and ground cinnamon

Optional: cloves, freshly ground nutmeg, allspice

Simply heat up your cider in a pan over the stove with your desired spices and maple syrup or microwave in a heat-proof mug. When the cider is nice and warm add the bourbon and give it a nice stir to combine all the flavors. If using cloves to season your cider make sure to strain them before enjoying your drink! Simple and delicious- the perfect kind of cocktail!
