Rugs 101

Rugs can be the hardest thing to select for a room, but they can also be the most wonderful item to pull your entire room together. I can personally attest to this, because for years I had delayed buying a rug. And to be honest, my living space never felt intimate or all that lovely. However, there were two reasons I restrained myself - one being that I was living in an apartment and figured I would probably move relatively soon and two, because rugs can be a pretty big investment and I wanted to make sure that the space and the other pieces were just right. But with all that being said, I think most people stray away from buying rugs because they don't know what style and size to buy and/or they don't really understand how much a rug can dramatically change a room.

I have gathered a few beautiful affordable rugs that vary from beautiful textural neutrals, to bold patterns that create a big wow factor taking your room from okay to perfect. A few tips & tricks also may help the task be less daunting, so with the help of a couple diagrams, you should be able to pick out exactly what works for you!

Tips & Tricks

  • There are so many options when it comes to rugs. The most important thing to remember is that more than likely the rug is going to cover quite a bit of space, so make sure you really LOVE it, because you can't hide it!

  • If you have a lot of neutrals throughout the space, sometimes your space can become a bit too "airy" and one easy way to ground the space is to use a darker rug that could possibly have some variation and movement in it.

  • On the other hand, a dark moody space with dark walls, furniture and some beautiful daylight calls for a fresh neutral rug. If you are a bit concerned about having a "white" rug on your floor and constantly being concerned something may spill, a great way to protect the white rug is to layer a cowhide on top. Cowhides really are the most durable thing, and not only does it provide protection, but it adds more texture and shape. I personally LOVE a good cowhide!

  • There are some people who just love color, a bright playful rug can really bring that unexpected quirky side to a room. A bold colorful rug, is a great way to make a big statement, but keep in mind the rest of your space should probably stay on the calmer side.

  • The placement of your rug is VERY important. It is what can take that fabulous rug you just bought and no matter how much you try it still looks sad in your space. The best rule to keep is to stay consistent. If your front legs of the furniture are on the rug, all your front legs should be on. If you have ALL of each piece on the rug, don't let any stray away. This second way is a bit trickier, but really it just requires a huge room with a HUGE rug.
  • There are a ton of great places to buy rugs out there at discount stores, warehouses, Target or even Home Goods. However, to make sure that after dragging your rug home it will fit in your space, I highly recommend measuring and figuring out what sizes will work for you. The best way is to simply measure, but if you still can't see it I highly recommend pulling out a sheet or blanket and figuring out the placement of the furniture. I promise it makes your life easier later on!
  • Because there are quite a few places you can pick up a rug, keep in mind that often times the smaller sizes are what you find in store and the larger sizes are online. This can be quite deceiving in a store, because you have no real sense of space, but most often 5"x8" are just too small. Personally, I like to check out my options in person to make sure that I love the texture, color and pattern then I go online and order the size that I really need.
  • Last but not least, don't forget to add a rug pad. This is important for various reasons - adds a level of safety by not reducing the slippage of the rug, it also extends the life of your rug, adds another level of protection to the floor, and most importantly adds another level of comfort to your floor.

l know it is a lot to take in, but the best way to figure out what will work is by trial and error. Drag a few options home, check out other homes and most importantly make sure you really enjoy your rug purchase! The worst that can happen is that it just doesn't work, so you take it back and try again!

Happy shopping & rearranging!
