As I have mentioned numerous times on the blog, brunch is probably my all time favorite meal, and when I have guests in town I always try to take them to at least one of my favorite brunch spots, which you can find here. However, as tempting as it may be going out for every meal on the weekend with guests can get pricey for both you and your guests, so I try to have a few back-up breakfast options at home for at least one day on the weekend. One of my favorites is a poached egg or bacon, but sometimes a warm hearty bowl of oatmeal with fresh fruit is even better. The weekend my parents came into town, I had a reservation for Rookwood Pottery for brunch on Sunday, but we needed a substantial and easy breakfast for the workday and oatmeal was the perfect thing! It is also great if you are planning to take your guests on serious walking tours through the city and brunch is a few hours later... either way, you really can't go wrong with a warm bowl of oatmeal during these cold months!
Makes 1 hot bowl of oatmeal
1/2 cup of 1 minute Quaker Oats
- 1 cup of milk
- Fresh or frozen berries (or whatever fruit you have on hand)
- 1 tsp of local honey
- chopped almonds or walnuts for extra protein or texture
Mix milk & oatmeal together in microwaveable bowl
- Heat in microwave for 1 minute & 30 seconds if using fresh berries or 1 minute without berries and an additional 40 seconds with frozen berries
- Add your honey or brown sugar & fresh fruit
My favorite thing about this meal is that it takes a grand total of 2 minutes, is healthy and most likely you have everything on hand. It is customizable for your guests, but it is also just great for an everyday breakfast. Do you have a favorite fruit or topping that you like to add?
